Hosting a gender reveal party has become a popular way for expecting parents to share exciting news about their baby with family and friends.
These celebrations can be as simple or as elaborate as you want, but the key is to make the moment special for everyone involved.
Here’s a guide to help you plan the perfect gender reveal party. Follow it step by step to enjoy your memorable event without the stress.
Why you should listen to me: My name is Nick Gray. I’ve hosted hundreds of parties all over the world. After making it a habit, I can easily host a gathering and make new friends with no sweat. New York Magazine once called me a host of “culturally significant” parties.
Choose the Date and Venue
The first step in planning any party is to select a time and location for the celebration. Think about the following:
- Timing: Select a day that works best for your nearest and dearest friends and relatives. Many wait until the baby’s gender can be correctly determined by ultrasound, which is usually around the midway point of pregnancy.
- Location: The venue might be a park, your house, an event hall, or even a restaurant. Base your decision on the number of visitors you expect and the ambiance you want to create.
PRO TIP: Outside venues work well for larger groups, especially when the weather is nice!
Send Invitations
Send out invitations well in advance. Start the preparations 3 weeks before your reveal date for the best turnout.
I highly suggest using digital invitations like Partiful, Mixily, Evite, or Paperless Post. It’s easier for you to track the number of guests since platforms like those have RSVP features.
Decide on a Theme
Your party may look better and feel more special when it has a well-thought-out theme. Several well-loved themes for gender reveal include:
- Traditional Pink and Blue: Use dinnerware, streamers, and balloons in shades of pink and blue to decorate.
- Seasonal Themes: Base your celebration around the current season, for example, “What’s the Buzz?” in the spring and summer or “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” in the winter.
- Unique Themes: Think about concepts such as “What Will It Bee: He or She?,” “Tutus or Touchdowns,” etc. Be open to brainstorming until you find the perfect one for you.
Plan the Reveal
The final reveal is the party’s high point. Here are some creative ways to unveil the gender:
- Balloon Pop: Stuff pink or blue confetti inside a huge black balloon, then pop it.
- Cake Cutting: Order a pink or blue cake to be cooked. The gender will be revealed by the color of the cake when it is cut.
- Smoke Bombs: Colored smoke bombs may be used to create a striking outdoor revelation.
- Piñata: Stuff confetti or pink or blue candies inside a piñata.
- Box of Balloons: Open the package of balloons to reveal helium balloons in either pink or blue colors.
Set Up Activities and Decorations
Use theme-appropriate décor to set the mood. This might include:
- Banners and Signs: “Boy or Girl?”, “He or She?”, and other playful signs.
- Table Settings: Plates, cups, napkins, and tablecloths in pink and blue or themed colors.
- Photo Booth: Create a photo booth area with props for guests to take fun pictures.
- Guess the Gender Name Tags: Provide themed name tags for guests as they arrive—have them pick the color “pink” for girl and “blue” for boy to cast their vote in guessing the baby’s gender. Plus this helps everyone get to know each other and can be a conversation starter
- Icebreakers: Prepare a few icebreaker questions to help guests mingle.
I love using icebreakers at a party. Here are some great, on-theme questions to get people talking:
- Do you have any funny baby name suggestions?
- What is your favorite thing about babies?
- What’s the funniest parenting story you’ve ever heard?
- What’s one piece of baby gear you think every new parent should have?
- What’s your favorite nursery rhyme or children’s book?
These questions are designed to spark conversations and help guests get to know each other while sharing in the excitement of the upcoming reveal.
Provide Food and Drinks
Every good gender reveal party has snacks or sweets. To satisfy your guests, offer a selection of refreshments as well. Think about:
- Snacks with a theme: cookies, cupcakes in pink and blue, and sweets.
- Drinks: Serve pink and blue beverages, including punch or lemonade. Blue cocktails or pink champagne are two examples of alcoholic alternatives.
- Main Course: You may serve a buffet, a complete dinner, or finger foods, depending on the time of day.
Capture the Moment
This isn’t a typical gathering. Assign a buddy or hire a photographer to capture images and videos of the special occasion.
Particularly at the unveiling, you’ll want to record everyone’s emotions. For the sake of your loved ones who can’t come in person, think about hosting a live broadcast.
Don’t forget to take a group photo!
Hand Out Party Favors
For the people who showed up to support you, give a little memento as a thank you. Ideas include:
- Little containers of blue or pink candies
- Customized cookies
- Magnets or keychains with themes
